General Product Safety Directive is now Enforced in Europe

Products importing and selling in the EU

must be safe for human use under normal

and

reasonably foreseeable conditions according to
the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD)
2001/95/EC. Subject to the national legislation process, the Directive is being transposed into
local law by individual Member State whilst the UK General Product Safety Regulations 2005
came into force on 1 October 2005.
Producers and distributors are required to ensure that all products supplied or made available to
consumers for their private use in the EU must be safe. Producers and distributors of unsafe
products shall bear the liabilities or penalties of any risks derived from the product concerned. A
product shall be presumed safe when it conforms to voluntary national standards or approved
European standards in addition to the relevant European directives that covered the essential
safety requirements for the concerning product category.
A list of approved European standards that can be used as demonstration of compliance with the
general safety requirement has been recently published in the Official Journal :
